What is the Gallaudet University Peer Mentoring Training Certificate Program?

The Gallaudet University Peer Mentoring Training Certificate Program is a certificate program designed to help train deaf, hard of hearing, late-deafened individuals who understand and are sensitive to the diverse needs of 32 million consumers who face challenges with communication inaccessibility. Individuals will be trained to provide needed skills and support to consumers in collaboration with licensed audiologists. Peer Mentor graduates will team with hearing health professionals to provide consumers and their families with practical approaches towards accomodations, use of assistive technologies, and equal access to communication.

How long is the program?

The program is predominantly a distance learning 16-credit unit curriculum that is contained in 7 courses completed over a period of 2 years. Mostly on-line courses allow for individuals who have work or family related obligations to participate in the program.

What is the content of this program?

The Gallaudet University Peer Mentor Training Certificate Program consists of 2 onsite seminars on the Gallaudet University campus (one 2-day and one 5-day seminar) and 5 on-line courses using the University's on-line Blackboard software.

Where are the courses held? Who teaches them?

This is predominantly a distance learning program so it may be completed anywhere a computer and an internet connection is available. Some classes will be held 'live' in an internet chat room. The 2 onsite seminars will be on the Gallaudet University campus in Washington, DC. The courses are taught by aural rehabilitationists, audiologists, speech pathologists, and/or other professionals in related fields. Materials for the course have been written by both professionals and consumers with hearing loss.

What is the cost of this program?

$25 Process fee per semester and $165 per credit. More information is located in the Applying page, as well as scholarship information.

When I complete the program, what credentials will I have?

Upon completion, the successful graduate will receive a Peer Mentoring Certificate from Gallaudet University.
