Meet the Peer Mentoring StaffMatthew H. Bakke, Ph.D.
|
Dr. Matthew H. Bakke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences at Gallaudet University. He was awarded and directs two research programs: the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Hearing Enhancement, a multi-center program of research and development in the area of technology and rehabilitation for people with hearing loss, and a field-initiated research project on the fitting of cochlear implants. Both research grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, NIDRR. Dr. Bakke served as the Director of Research at The Lexington School for the Deaf/Center for the Deaf from 1993 to 2001, and as Executive Director of the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center from 1998 to 2001. He has had experience as a teacher of the Deaf, clinical audiologist and researcher in the speech and hearing sciences. Dr. Bakke received his Ph.D. degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from City University of New York in 1999. Research interests include binaural hearing, hearing enhancement technologies (including cochlear implants) and technologies and materials for improving aural rehabilitation. |

Samantha recently graduated with her clinical doctorate in audiology from Gallaudet University and will be pursuing her PhD starting Fall 2009. She completed her fourth-year rotation at Marion Downs Hearing Center where she was a pediatric LEND Fellow. Her clinical interests include pediatric diagnostics, electrophysiologic measures, vestibular assessment, and early hearing detection and intervention, with a particular interest in universal newborn hearing screening. Her research interests include high frequency acoustic stapedial reflexes in the neonatal population, VEMP assessment, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder and objective auditory measures to include ABR and ASSR. She has been instructing for the Peer Mentoring certificate program, a part of the RERC on Hearing Enhancement, since Spring 2007. She continues to teach and have an active role in the development of this revolutionary program. |

Jane Tabor joined the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) team as an Instructor in 2008. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Communication Sciences & Disorders and a B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Florida. She received her M.S. in Audiology from Gallaudet University where she is currently an Au.D. candidate. Jane is in the process of completing her residency at the Washington D.C. VA Medical Center and works part-time as a newborn hearing screener at Washington Hospital Center. She has had experience as a licensed teacher, speech therapist and graduate audiology clinician working in a variety of clinical and educational settings. As a PEAE (Pediatric-Educational Audiology Emphasis) federal grant recipient with a focus in pediatrics, she plans on working primarily with children (birth-21) in a clinical or school-based setting. |
SPECIALIZATIONS Amplification (fitting of Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants), Assistive Technology (for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people), and Pediatric/Adult Aural Rehabilitation (with use of American Sign Language, Cued Speech, and/or Visual Phonics as support). ASSOCIATIONS

Janine Mazzuca became part of the Department of Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences (HSLS) at Gallaudet University in 2007. Prior to joining the department, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering with concentration in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering in 2006 from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She then completed her thesis in 2007, entitled "Development and Performance Evaluation of a Telemedicine Platform Incorporating Live Interactive Multimedia and Data Sharing", for which she had done research with the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC. Throughout her undergraduate and graduate careers, she has done consultant work for various companies and research institutions involving technical support, software development, website and application development, and graphic design.Janine serves as the Senior Research Engineer for the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Hearing Enhancement (RERC-HE), heavily involved in the software development and hardware fabrication in many of the research projects. Her job involves coordinating and overseeing all technical areas within the HSLS department, overseeing design, development, and maintenance of new software and hardware systems for clinical, academic, and other research needs, and overseeing development and maintenance of all web-based applications and sites. She also serves as the webmaster for this website. |
